Volunteering

Spiral staircase at Yorkshire Sculpture Park

We are looking for people to volunteer in a number of roles with a range of skills. But don’t worry if you don’t think you have the skills or knowledge to undertake a role. Talk to us and we may be able to provide the training and support needed.

Be a designer
Get experience in designing posters, flyers and websites for community groups.

Help us with the computers
Support centre users with the computers and help maintain our network.

Help run the resource centre
Staff the reception desk or help us with administration and keeping in touch with our members through our newsletters and emails.

Change the future of Oblong
Join the Development Collective and help us create new projects for Oblong and find funding for our work.

Improve the local environment
The Gardening Collective turn ugly and neglected patches of green space into beautiful places for everyone. If you can use a spade, you can join!

Become a film maker
The Video Collective makes drama and documentaries with a local focus. Directors, writers, photographers and editors are needed. Training given.

Teach English
We need volunteers to help in our English as a foreign language classes, as classroom assistants or helping to lead the lessons. No experience is needed, just a good standard of English.

Why ‘collectives’?
We call these groups collectives because all paid staff and volunteers work collectively in them – we make decisions and do the work together. We'll try to find a role for you as soon as we can, but depending on how many volunteers and how much work we have, you may not be able to start volunteering immediately.

Why Volunteer?

People volunteer for a whole range of reasons; we came up with the following as good reasons to volunteer:

  • To get out of the house
  • To gain new skills
  • To gain experience to get a job you want
  • To have fun
  • To be with friends who already volunteer
  • To gain an insight into local community
  • To meet people and make new friends
  • To work with particular sections of the community
  • To do something which is recognised
  • To improve the local community
