Was I unlucky - a prose poem
Last monday week - the day the latest spell of bad weather started - the latest of the incidents described below happened. Fortunately no-one was injured.
Was I unlucky that I dropped the key for my car
Didn’t realise I d dropped it
That some young lads found the key
drove the car away
then crashed it
to the point where it was irreparable
Was I unlucky that just a few months later
when I was only going slightly too fast
for the wet road conditions
I skidded and hit a van coming the other way
and had another car written off
Was I unlucky that when I parked outside my house
in the month of November when young lads are queueing up to cause acts of vandalism in my street
And that having smashed a car window a few days previously
They now found it easy to break into the car
through the temporary perspects window
And roll the car down the road despite its immobiliser
Crashing into two parked cars and again rendering a car of mine irreparable
And now am I unlucky that as snow began to fall more heavily
on an ungritted or poorly gritted motorway
When I was going below the recommended speed limit
And thought I was far enough behind the van in front of me
That I couldn’t see the mayhem in front of me
of multiple accidents and incidents
And I got into a forward skid when the van in front of me slowed suddenly
And crashed into him when he came to a halt
And having thought I was starting to drive more carefully
I now had my fourth write-off in 3 years
No ! Just as in the game of snooker
where there is no bad luck when one is at the table
So in the ownership and driving of motor vehicles
I did not have enough control of the situations
I am too embarrassed to tell everyone I know of this latest mishap
So I’ve written these words – an attempt at a poem
And will publish it on various websites and e-lists
Just so I don t need to keep explaining

Well, you were pretty unlucky
Well, you were pretty unlucky to get your car nicked and then broken into. Somebody up there is telling you to get a bike. I'm happy you're okay.
